For Appropriators:

This is a brilliant video by RocketBoom's Know Your Meme specialists, about copyright and internet culture. Know your rights!

  1. This is great Liz! Thanks! Good to know this is built in to youtube's infrastructure. fyi, it's pretty rare that a piece that goes to film festivals or shows in small galleries has any issues with copyright because you're usually not making any money and not that many people pay much attention to underground and experimental film anyway (but we can change that). The only point where this might be an issue is if you exhibit in a prominent gallery and sell the video work as an edition, or if you get a distribution deal, but even then, it's unlikely you'll have any issues. An artist like Nic Provost who appropriated Rashamon and other films has had no problems to my knowledge and is distributed by the Video Data Bank, which gives him some cut of rental fees.
